There are some things that are a part of every Chicago Bucket List like visiting the lake, taking in the skyscraper views, and walking away with a tin of Garrett Mix.
Since 1949, Chicagoans have been lining up to get their Garrett Popcorn fix and leaving the home-grown popcorn shops with cheddar dusted fingers and bags of goodness that will undoubtedly be empty before they even get back home. Showing up with a tin of this at a party is guaranteed to be received with smiles. To say it's a Chicago tradition would be underselling it.
If you're a classic popcorn lover, you can take your pick from caramel, cheese, or buttery but the most requested option has to be the world famous Garrett Mix. It’s the perfect combination of sweet and savory, and it’s basically been dubbed “Chicago-style” popcorn. The Garrett signature mix was born around 1977 from customers who would habitually order one bag of caramel, one bag of cheddar, and a third empty bag (so they could mix it themselves).
The delicious aroma wafting around each shop probably gives it away, but the popcorn is prepared fresh all day, every day. Each small batch begins with a proprietary blend of non-GMO kernels which their cooks hand stir in their signature Copper Kettles according to secret family recipes.
To help follow social distancing protocols and keep their staff and customer's safe, Garrett Popcorn has also introduced online ordering for pick up at the locations that are open. This will help reduce crowds in the stores, waiting in lines, and limit contact with others. See which location near you is open here. Contactless delivery is also now available through Postmates in the downtown area and the South Side.
To further ensure safety, added precautions include floor decals for social distancing, capacity limits inside of the shop, plexiglass separations, hand sanitizer, daily health screenings for Garrett team members and a requirement for them to wear masks and gloves, and increased cleaning and sanitization practices. Fans are expected to wear masks and maintain six feet of social distancing.
Needless to say, Garrett Popcorn is doing everything in their power to keep customers and staff happy, healthy, and full of delicious popcorn! Make sure to make a stop and pick up a bag of Garrett Mix for your drive home.
Don't get left out.
